Hunderwasser
17.5'' x 28''
Jorge and I went to see the Phillips Collection while we were in Washington, D.C. In a small downstairs area for temporary exhibitions we saw work by the Austrian artist, Hunderwasser, for the first time. His strong colors and urban landscape parcels of composition appealed to an After the Bauhaus/Postmodernism that we sensed in our own work. Jorge included a sailboat prominently in this semi-portrait of that artist we had both admired. An article or interview had informed us that he lived on his. The white ray entering the scene through the window represents a force or blow applied to a ball whose trajectory is indicated by red arrows. The butterfly probably represents a butterfly but the keyholes in the folded heart positioned at the level of the portrait's chin invite interpretation as if to say that the viewer has the key.
