.Admissions and Records FAQ

How many students are enrolled at Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC)?
During Fall 2009, over 3400 students are enrolled at Dyersburg State. In addition to the Dyersburg Campus, these students are enrolled at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County, the DSCC Gibson County Center, and in courses taught at several high schools in the DSCC service area.

What activities does DSCC offer?
Students have a choice of several organizations that they can join. All students are members of the Student Government Association. Other organizations range from the Advanced Technology Association to the Student Nurses Association. Information about each student organization is listed in the DSCC Catalog and Student Handbook.

How much does it cost to attend DSCC?
DSCC is very affordable. For the 2009-2010 academic year, all students, whether residents or non-residents of Tennessee, will pay a maintenance fee of $111 per semester hour up to 12 hours per semester. There is also a $10 Campus/Center Access fee and a $10 International fee for all students and a $3 student activity fee for students enrolling in seven or more hours. A Technology Access Fee is assessed based on the number of credit hours in which the student enrolls. The fee varies from $72 for three credit hours to $90 for four credit hours to $112.50 for five or more credit hours. For DSCC online courses and for Regents Online Degree Program (RODP) courses, there are additional fees.

What is the cost if my permanent residence is not in Tennessee?
If you live in Pemiscot or Dunklin counties in Missouri or Mississippi County in Arkansas, you will pay the same fees as a Tennessee resident. If you live outside these counties, you should talk to someone in the DSCC Business Office.

Is financial aid available? How do I apply for financial aid/scholarships?
Yes, financial aid is available to qualifying applicants. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application used by DSCC and is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. There is no fee for the FAFSA.

March 1 is the priority application date for scholarships that are available at DSCC. You must have completed an Application for Admission, submitted official copies of your high school transcript or GED scores and official copies of any previous college transcripts; submitted official ACT scores if you are under 21; and the official results of the FAFSA. DSCC receives official copies directly from the issuing institution either by mail or electronic means.

What is the minimum American College Testing  (ACT) score I must have to be accepted at DSCC?
If you are working toward a degree and are under 21, ACT scores are required, but no minimum score is needed for admission.

How and when do I take the ACT test?
You can pick up a registration packet from your guidance counselor, or you can register online at www.ACT.org. On the registration form, list DSCC as a receiving institution for your scores. If you do that, your scores will be automatically sent to DSCC. DSCC’s ACT code is 3969.

How is the ACT used?
The ACT is used for course placement. If you have a 19 or higher in English, reading and mathematics, you are ready to take all college-level courses. If your scores are below 19, you will need to take one or more developmental studies courses. Remember, DSCC requires no minimum ACT score, but you want to make sure we have all of your ACT results.

What are the admissions requirements?
The admissions requirements vary depending on whether you are a high school graduate and how old you are at the time you are applying for admission. With some exceptions, students will need to submit official transcripts of all high school and college work, provide proof of immunizations, and take either the ACT or the Computerized Placement Assessment and Support System (COMPASS) test. Detailed information is available under Admissions Requirements.

How long will it take to get my degree?
That depends on a lot of things, like whether you are going to school full or part time, and if you plan to attend in summer, or if you need to take developmental studies courses. Most students take two years or more to graduate with a DSCC degree.

What if DSCC does not have my major?
Even if DSCC does not have your major, you can take many of the courses that will be needed for your major. Courses such as English, science, history, speech and computers are required in all majors at universities. You can take many of these courses at Dyersburg State at a lower cost.

What if I don’t know what I want to major in?
If you don’t know, you’re in the majority of students as most don’t know what they want to major in when they start college. To help you with your decision, you can make an appointment to talk with DSCC counselor Pam Dahl at 731/ 286-3242. DSCC offers this service free of charge.

Is tutoring available?
For eligible students, tutoring may be available through Student Support Services. It is free but you have to meet eligibility requirements to receive tutoring through this program.

Who will help me select my classes?
When your Application for Admission is received in the Office of Admissions and Records, you will be assigned a faculty advisor. Your advisor will be someone who knows about the area that you want to study. DSCC also has advising centers located on the Dyersburg Campus, the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County, and at the DSCC Gibson County Center.

When will I be able to register for classes?
You will be able to register for classes after you receive a letter telling you when you are ready to see your advisor and register for classes, but before we can send you this letter, we need your Application for Admission and your ACT score.

Can I transfer in grades from other colleges?
Yes. A grade of “C” or higher is required for transfer. If you have taken classes through another college or university, you need to request that your transcript be sent directly to the Office of Admissions and Records on the Dyersburg Campus.

Answers to many other questions can be found by entering a key word or phrase on the DSCC home page.
