Our mission is to provide the bridge that connects students to the workplace. What is Career Technical Education? Career Technical Education (CTE) is an opportunity for high school students to receive a solid academic and technical foundation within a career pathway of their choice. The Career Technical Education program aligns courses and curricula for CTE courses offered at the high school level to courses taught at the post-secondary level. This alignment provides for high school students, enrolled in these vocational and technical related courses, to have the opportunity to receive credit for their completed coursework without repeating those courses at the post-secondary level. These college credits are offered at no charge to the student through a process called dual credit. Dyersburg State Community College and the high school district offices in the college’s service area, have come to an agreement as to the content and curricula of the coursework necessary for the alignment. Both parties have also agreed upon the requirements a student must meet prior to awarding dual credit for the course. DSCC requires the student to complete the course at the high school level with a passing grade, complete an end of course comprehensive examination with a grade of 70 or better, make application for dual credit, enroll at DSCC, and successfully complete three (3) credits within two (2) years of high school graduation. Dyersburg State currently offers dual credit in approximately twenty-five (25) different college courses. Not every high school offers every course or every career pathway. Students and parents should check with their high school guidance department for a list of Career Technical Education courses offered that may be available for dual credit.. Dual Enrollment options may also be available. Dual Enrollment allows a junior or senior high school student to enroll at DSCC and receive college credit for classes that are taught either at their high scholl or on the college campus. There is a fee for the college class, as with any DSCC student, however students may qualify for a $300.00 lottery scholarship to help with the cost of Dual Enrollment. For further information on Dual Enrollment financial aid, you may refer to Financial Aid, on the DSCC web site, and click on the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship tab.
