The Dyer County Adult Education offers its programs to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability and is an equal opportunity employer. Class Information: Classroom instruction is for students who are comfortable learning in an independent, small or large group setting. Classes cover such subjects as reading, writing, literature and the arts, social studies, science, math and life skills. Call 731/ 285-3020 for information. The following times are for the Dyer County Literacy Dyersburg program site at 115 King Ave. (unless noted): Families First 8 A.M. to noon Monday through Friday. Adult Education 8 to 11 A.M. Monday through Friday. 1 to 3 P.M. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday and Thursday. Dyer County Literacy has expanded adult education classes to local businesses. The following site and schedule is for a workplace class: 3:30 to 5:30 P.M. Tuesdays and Thursday at Jimmy Dean English as a Second Language classes are available: 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday and Thursdays An Even Start (Family Literacy) class also is available 8 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. Monday through Thursday One-On-One Tutoring: Dyer County Literacy has skilled tutors available for students desiring help with reading skills. Tutors are trained in the Laubach method during a 12-hour workshop. Certified tutors then are matched with students accordingly. Tutors and students meet for 90 minutes once or twice a week. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. She has worked in the educational field since 1992. Merry Carter Families First Teacher Merry Carter graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in psychology. She also received an associate’s degree in business. After working in education in Lauderdale County for eight years, she and her family moved to Dyer County. She says: “I heard about the need for an adult education teacher in Lake County. I worked in Lake County for two months until another teacher, who lives in Lake County, was hired. When a job opened up in Dyer County in 2001, I accepted that position since I wanted to work in Dyer County to be closer to my children. I have thoroughly enjoyed working in this position since.” Beth Feith Dyer County Adult Education Director Beth Feith graduated from Furman University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and an Master of Arts in Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Difficulties. |
