Event : Arun Gandhi to Speak
Category : Community
Date : 11/16/2009
Time : 11:15 am & 6:30 pm
Details : On Monday, November 16, Dyersburg State Community College's International Studies Program will host two presentations by Arun Gandhi, the grandson of India's late spiritual leader Mohandas Karamchand "Mahatma" Gandhi. The presentations will take place in the Learning Resource Center on the Dyersburg campus at 11:15 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. They are free and open to the public.
This is a change from the previously announced date of November 9.
Arun Gandhi was born in 1934 in Durban, South Africa. In 1946, just before India gained independence from Britain, Arun's parents took him to live with his grandfather for 18 months. At 23, Arun returned to India, worked as a reporter for The Times of India, and cofounded India's Center for Social Unity, whose mission is to alleviate poverty and caste discrimination.
Arun and his wife, Sunanda, came to the United States in 1987 and in 1991 founded the M. K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence in Memphis, Tennessee.
