251 to receive degrees from DSCC On Saturday, May 9, after a week full of rain and storm threats, over 160 candidates for graduation from Dyersburg State Community College gathered to take part in the 39th annual commencement exercises at the Dyer County High School gymnasium. This year altogether 251 students are expected to graduate from DSCC. This number includes those who completed their coursework in Fall of '08, the Spring of '09 as well those who will finish at the end of Summer '09. This is the fourth year that commencement has been held at DCHS to accommodate the number of friends, family and well-wishers that attend the event. Key speaker for the event was Dr. Richard Rhoda. Rhoda is the executive director of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, a post he has held since 1997. Since last July, he is also the interim executive director of the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation. Rhoda remarked, “You, but also your children will achieve a higher quality of life because you invested in higher education." He continued, "We must think long term. We must have confidence that many of our problems are being solved for the long term. We will come out of this difficult time stronger and wiser. We will be more resourceful. We will educate our way successfully out of this tunnel." After Rhoda's remarks, DSCC President Karen Bowyer presented a plaque to Nicole Shepard in memory of her father Ty Sirmans. Sirmans was a Work Force Investment Act case worker for Lake County. He died unexpectedly in April. Retired Vice President of Computer Services John Moore, Vice President of Institutional Advancement Douglas "Buck" Tarpley, DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center Director Janet Newman, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Marty Hurrah and Assistant Professor of Nursing Pat Warren were also recognized by Dr. Bowyer for their service to the college. Music for commencement was provided by the DSCC Jazz Choir Syncopation and the Dyersburg Community Orchestra. DSCC Alumni Association President Maleia Lee of Friendship gave the closing remarks. A reception for all in attendance followed the ceremony.
