On November 13, 1994 Blake McMeans was ranked the number 4 high school tennis player in the nation. That night he made the tragic decision to drive while intoxicated. He ran off the road, hit a tree, and nearly died. He is now a paralyzed. McMeans will be speaking at the DSCC Gibson County Center on Monday, September 21 at 11:00 A.M. He will speak at the Student Center on the Dyersburg campus on September 22 at 3:00 P.M. "I speak publicly, especially to young people, because I want to try to stop as many people as I can from making the nearly deadly mistake I made: drinking and driving," said McMeans. "In my case, we're talking about someone who had it all, someone who, overnight, went from being voted best looking in high school and being ranked #4 in the nation in tennis, to being confined to a wheelchair. Maybe you can imagine what it was like going from being top in nation in tennis to not being able to walk." McMeans appearance is made possible through funding from a grant from the Citizens of Actions Group, a Gibson County-wide initiative with many participating members. This organization's goal is to provide the citizens of Gibson County and the surrounding areas with programs that assist in the prevention of drug usage and abuse, among other important social issues.
