At its Fall Conference held on Friday, October 16, Brian Brown was named an Outstanding Alumnus of Dyersburg State Community College. The award was presented to him by DSCC Alumni Association President Steve Guttery in front of the nearly 225 faculty and staff members gathered at the Student Center on the Dyersburg campus for their quarterly meeting.
Brown graduated from McNairy Central High School in Selmer in 1977. He received his associate of science degree from Dyersburg State in 1979, making the dean’s list for three semesters while attending the college. He then continued his education at the University of Tennessee at Martin. There he completed his bachelor of science in physical education and his master’s of science in education administration and supervision.
Brown then began a career in education. His first teaching job was at Holice Powell Junior High in Dyersburg where he worked from 1983 to 1984. He then moved closer to home and taught at Selmer Middle School from 1985 to 1987. From 1988 to 1999 he taught at McNairy Central High School. In 1999 he transferred to Dyersburg High School; then in 2008 he moved to Dyersburg Learning Center where he now serves as assistant principal and teacher.
In 1991 Brown received his Tennessee Career Ladder Level III certification. McNairy County named him Adult Education Volunteer of the Year in 1998. In 2008 he was named Educator of the Month by the Dyersburg School System.
While teaching has been his vocation, athletics have been his passion. While at Dyersburg State, Brown played second base for the baseball team. He also played guard for the basketball team and was named most valuable player for the 78-79 season. In the Dyersburg State Tip Off tournament, he was named to the all-tournament team.
Brown has been named Tennessee Athletic Coach of the Year seven times. He has also been named district coach of the year seven times. In 1991 he was named All West Tennessee Coach of the Year by the Jackson Sun.
Brown and his wife Laura live here in Dyersburg. They have three children: Steven, Michael and Chase.
The DSCC Alumni Association makes Outstanding Alumni award presentations four times each year. Nominations for the award are submitted by Dyersburg State faculty, staff and alumni. Selections are made based on contributions to and achievements in their chosen profession and their community.
