Course Placement

At DSCC, course placement for new students is determined by a number of factors. Find the category below that describes you.

Your placement in courses is based on one or more of the following:

  • ACT scores no older than three years
  • ACT Compass scores
  • Successful completion (grade of C or higher) in college-level English, mathematics and a reading intensive course

Current high school student who wishes to take an English or mathematics course:

  • To take an English course - ACT score of 18 or higher in English and 19 or higher in Reading
  • To take a mathematics course - ACT score of 22 or higher in Math

Non-high school graduate or no Regular (Standard) Diploma:

  • You must take the entire COMPASS and enroll only in developmental studies courses as determined by your scores.

Student not working toward a degree or certificate at DSCC (Personal or Professional Enrichment, College Graduate, Audit):

  • While you are not subject to overall course placement by either ACT or COMPASS scores, you may be limited in the college-level courses you wish to take, especially in English and mathematics. Contact the Office of Admissions for specific information.
