
The Health Information Technology concentration provides students with a
wide range of skills required to be successful in the Health Information
Department of a medical facility. The graduate is eligible to
write the national examination for Registered Health Information
Technician (RHIT).
Students must be aware that ICD-10 will be the coding system
utilized in healthcare facilities and required by the CCA and
RHIT examinations beginning in January 2013.
The Health Information Technology program at DSCC is an
online program. All HIT courses are offered online.
To facilitate success in this program, all students should enroll
in ORN 1010 Orientation: Learning to Succeed during their first
semester at DSCC.
TYPICAL JOBS: Director of a health information management
department, assistant director/supervisor or clinical coder for a
health care facility.

To graduate with an AAS degree or a certificate in Health
Information Technology, students must earn a “C” or
better in each required course and must have a 2.00
minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) in college-
level courses.
BIOL 2010 and BIOL 2020 must have been completed
within five years prior to the admission date.
For students taking the professional or directed practice
course(s) a criminal background check and drug screen
are required by most clinical facilities for assurance of
patient safety. Based on the results of these checks, an
affiliated clinical site may determine not to allow a student’s
presence at their facility.
For students taking the professional or directed practice
course(s), most clinical facilities require current immunizations,
a negative TB skin test or a chest X-ray.
HIT Expenses
The HIT program consists of 66 credit hours. You can go to DSCC tuition and fee information page to learn more.
You can visit the DSCC Bookstore page to determine the costs of your books.
Additional expenses to the HIT student include the cost of
liability insurance, background check, drug screen, TB skin
test or chest X-ray and any immunizations required. Transportation
to and from clinical agencies is the responsibility of the
student.
