Section 2: Core Requirement 2.1
The institution has degree-granting authority from the appropriate government agency or agencies.
Statement of Compliance: Dyersburg State Community College is in compliance with Core Requirement 2.1.
Rationale for Judgment of Compliance:
Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) has degree-granting authority from the appropriate government agency or agencies. Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Policy, 6:06:00:00 Sections X. 1.a, 2 and 3 give degree granting authority to DSCC [Ref 1]. In a called session by the Tennessee State Board of Education on June 13, 1967, a resolution [Ref 2] was unanimously passed to locate a community college in Dyersburg, Tennessee. In 1972, the State University and Community College System was established [Ref 3] with DSCC listed as one of the community colleges to fall within its jurisdiction. The Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) was concurrently established to govern, manage and control the System [Ref 4]. TBR has authority to approve all degree and academic programs of TBR institutions [Ref 5].
In addition to TBR oversight, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) coordinates public higher education offered through the State University and Community College System and the University of Tennessee System. Among its duties, THEC has the task of reviewing and approving or disapproving all proposals for new degrees or degree programs from TBR [Ref 6] [Ref 7].
