Section 2: Core Requirement 2.8
Statement of Compliance:
Dyersburg State Community College is in compliance with Core Requirement 2.8.Rationale for Judgment of Compliance:
The number of full-time faculty members at Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) is adequate to support the mission [Ref 1] of the institution. DSCC has adequate faculty resources to ensure the quality and integrity of its instructional programs.
The Vice President for the College is primarily responsible for Core Requirement 2.8. [Ref 2]. Reporting to the Vice President for the College are the deans of the three academic divisions: the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Dean of Business and Technology, and the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health [Ref 3]. Academic deans are assisted by coordinators or directors. All full-time and part-time faculty members are assigned to at least one of the three academic divisions [Ref 4] [Ref 5] [Ref 6].
DSCC offers the Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Science, and Associate of Arts degrees and certificate programs [Ref 7]. As of Fall 2005, DSCC had a total of 57 full-time faculty members and employed approximately 120 adjunct faculty members. Since the Fall of 2005, the number of full-time faculty members has increased to 59. Total enrollment for the Fall 2005 semester was 2,477 students with a full-time equivalent (FTE) of 1,769.5. The average class size for Fall 2005 was 21 students. The trend for class size is between 15 and 24 students with only a few classes over 30 students [Ref 8] [Ref 9] [Ref 10] Ref 11].
The percentage of credit hours taught by adjunct faculty at DSCC in Fall 2005 was 42 percent and is currently 41 percent. Adjunct faculty members are employed when necessary to minimize teaching overloads or to staff teaching areas where there is not enough enrollment to justify employment of full-time faculty (example: American government) [Ref 12] [Ref 13].
Faculty Resources
Learning Resource Center (LRC): The LRC provides services to faculty which include instructional multimedia production; college-wide delivery of video, overhead, data projectors, slide, audio recording, and playback equipment; public address and digital photographic services; PowerPoint presentation production; transparency production for overhead projection, including color and black and white; audio/video cassette duplication; lamination services; satellite downlink services; and computer-based instructional artwork. The Media Center staff also provides support for such activities as recruitment, faculty and staff development programs, and public information productions. The Media Center staff also provides faculty and staff training in the production of effective instructional materials and in the use of audio/visual equipment such as overhead projectors, data projectors, and Smart Boards [Ref 14].
A new LRC recently opened at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County, and a new LRC is under construction on the Dyersburg campus. All LRC facilities (Dyersburg Campus, Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County and the Gibson County Center) provide faculty with work space and resources for instructional development [Ref 15].
The Dean of the LRC provides an orientation on the library's resources and services to all new instructors and academic administrators. Faculty members are encouraged to bring their students to the LRC at the beginning of each semester for an orientation to the LRC and instruction for improving information literacy. The LRC is considered an "Information Gateway", and as such, all employees have remote access to online databases through its Web site [Ref 16] [Ref 17] [Ref 18].Staff Development:
The Faculty and Staff Development Committee at DSCC encourages and provides professional development opportunities for faculty members. Professional development opportunities are regularly scheduled at the beginning of each semester during sessions designated as "Fall Update" and "Spring Update" and at mid-semester at sessions designated as "Fall Conference" and "Spring Conference." All faculty members are expected to attend these professional development days. Special funds were allocated by the State for the professional development of African-American faculty members through 2006. Several faculty members completed their master’s and doctoral degrees by using DSCC education funding [Ref 19] [Ref 20] [Ref 21] [Ref 22].Instructional Technology:
Faculty are encouraged to attend instructional training workshops offered by the Distance Education Coordinator/Instructional Design Specialist, the Instructional Technology Specialist and the media center staff [Ref 23] [Ref 24]. Training programs include the use of WebCT for supplemental course instruction, development of Web pages, PowerPoint presentation development and delivery, scanning images into PowerPoint presentations, online course development, and use of administrative software. DSCC’s classrooms have connection points to the Internet, and most classrooms have computer stations and projection units [Ref 25]. Instructional Review: Program reviews and academic audits provide a formal assessment process to assist faculty in reviewing, revising and implementing appropriate changes in course and program curricula. Accrediting agencies and advisory committees support faculty by helping to guide the establishment of new programs, appropriate curricular changes, and the recruitment of students and qualified faculty [Ref 26] [Ref 27] [Ref 28].Authored by Dr. Mary Ann Sellars in coordination with the SACS Leadership Team
