Section 3: Comprehensive Standard 3.4.10
The institution places primary responsibility for the content, quality, and effectiveness of its curriculum with its faculty.

Statement of Compliance: Dyersburg State Community College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.4.10.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance:

Faculty members at Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) have the primary responsibility for the content, quality, and effectiveness of the curriculum in the College's educational programs, including the development of course syllabi, learning outcomes for each course, textbook selection, and assessment of learning.

Program Review

All academic programs are reviewed on a five-year cycle unless otherwise specified by the accrediting body. In addition, audits have been completed for mathematics and English to date. The program reviews and the academic audits are the responsibility of the division deans and the faculty members teaching within each program under review or audit [Ref 1].

Curriculum Review

Instructional Council: In addition to periodic formal program review, the College Instructional Council ensures that changes in the curriculum, including revisions in degree programs, individual course descriptions, and content are made in a careful and systematic way involving a cross section of the faculty [Ref 2]. The Instructional Council assures compliance with Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) requirements, including the credit-hour limit on degree programs [Ref 3], compliance with the TBR General Education Core Curriculum requirements [Ref 4]. Recommendations of the Instructional Council are subject to review and approval by both the Vice President for the College and the President [Ref 5] [Ref 6].

Assessment: DSCC faculty members have several measures at its disposal to evaluate curriculum. In addition to the formal program reviews, these include the results of the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST), the Community College Survey of Student Engagement, the alumni survey, and the employer survey [Ref 7]. The data collected using these instruments are reviewed by the Institutional Effectiveness Committee, which uses the results to determine where modifications may be needed.

Advisory Committees: Discussions and meetings with advisory committees provide another opportunity for faculty to assess curriculum in associate of applied science degrees and certificates. Each advisory committee is scheduled to meet annually with the dean, Vice President of the College, President and other faculty members of the division. The existing curriculum is carefully reviewed with members of the advisory committee to determine if the curriculum is consistent with the needs in the workplace and of the students [Ref 8].

Faculty Evaluation: Learning is the primary focus of the Faculty Evaluation System [Ref 9]. All faculty members, tenured and non-tenured, are evaluated annually. The division deans are primarily responsible for conducting the evaluation of faculty members. The evaluation includes a review of syllabi, instructional materials, examinations, grading policies and different teaching strategies used by the faculty member [Ref 10].
