Section 2: Comprehensive Standard 3.4.3

The institution publishes admissions policies that are consistent with its mission.

 

Statement of Compliance: Dyersburg State Community College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.4.3.

 

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance:

 

The admissions policies of Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) are consistent with the institution's mission statement [Ref 1], specifically its mission to provide “open-access” to improve the quality of life in the communities which DSCC serves.

 

DSCC publishes admissions policies for both degree-seeking and non degree-seeking students in its annual catalog and student handbook [Ref 2] and on the DSCC Admissions and Records Web site [Ref 3]. The admission policies for specific programs such as Nursing, Surgical Technology, and Health Information Technology are also included in the annual catalog and student handbook [Ref 4]


DSCC's admissions policies are consistent with Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) admissions policy [Ref 5] and admissions guideline [Ref 6]. DSCC, along with other institutions in the TBR system, must have approval from the TBR for its admissions policies. Each institution’s admissions policies must be in accord with the institution's mission and with TBR policy.

 
DSCC’s mission statement includes its commitment to the “education of a non-racially identifiable student body and promotes diversity and access without regard to race, gender, religion, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status.” As such, DSCC continues a policy of admissions that encourages diversity, as exemplified by the makeup of the 2006 Fall student body which included 16 Native Americans, 28 Hispanics, 456 African-Americans, and 2070 Caucasians. During this semester, DSCC also had an enrollment of 38.6 percent non-traditional students (age twenty-five and above) [Ref 7].
