Placement
At DSCC, course placement for new students is determined by a number of factors. Find the category below that describes you. Your placement in courses is based on one or more of the following:
- ACT scores no older than five years
- ACCUPLACER scores
- Successful completion (grade of C or higher) in college-level English, mathematics and a reading intensive course
Current high school student who wishes to take an English or Mathematics course:
- To take an English course – ACT score of 18 or higher in English and 19 or higher in Reading
- To take a mathematics course – ACT score of 19 or higher in Math for MATH 1530 Introductory Statstics or a 22 or higher in Math for MATH 1710 Precalculus Algebra
First-time Freshman:
- Under 21 years of age – Your ACT scores will be used to determine course placement. If your ACT scores are older than five years when you enroll as a degree-seeking student, you will need to retake the ACT.
- 21 or over – You will need to take the ACCUPLACER test.
Transfer Student:
- Under 21 years of age – Your ACT scores will be used to determine course placement. If your ACT scores are older than five years, you will need to retake the ACT.
- 21 or over – You will need to take the ACCUPLACER test.
Transient Student:
- To take an English course – ACT score of 18 or higher in English and 19 or higher in Reading
- To take a mathematics course – ACT score of 22 or higher in Math
International Student:
- Under 21 years of age – Your ACT or SAT scores will be used to determine course placement. If your ACT scores are older than five years when you enroll as a degree-seeking student, you will need to retake the ACT or SAT.
- 21 or over – You will need to take the ACCUPLACER test.
Non-High School graduate or no regular (Standard) diploma:
- You must take the entire ACCUPLACER and enroll only in Learning Support courses as determined by your scores.
Student not working toward a degree or certificate at DSCC (Personal or Professional Enrichment, College Graduate, Audit:
- While you are not subject to overall course placement by either ACT or ACCUPLACER scores, you may be limited in the college-level courses you wish to take, especially in English and mathematics.
