Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) will host an artist reception for the Tipton Art League Plein Air Painters and the Tipton County Extension Master Gardeners on Monday, April 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The reception will be held at the Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County inside the Learning Resource Center’s Ripley Power and Light lobby.

The paintings in the exhibit are scenes of Tipton County that were painted “en plein air,” which means “in the open air.” The artists painted scenes around Brighton, TN, including the old train depot in Covington (now the UT-TSU Extension Office), Covington’s Square, Covington’s water tower, Hotel Lindo, St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, the gazebo on the square in Covington, and more. Participating artists include Jenny Brandon, Barrie Foster, Tammy Langlois, Rachel Suratt, Patsy Turner, and the late Richard Reed. Jenny Brandon is a retired teacher from the Ripley School system and enjoys learning to paint in all mediums. Barrie Foster retired as the Director of the Tipton County Museum and now teaches art at the VA in Memphis to the 4H Expressionists, the seniors through Creative Aging, and at Liberty Vintage Marketplace in Covington. Tammy Langlois teaches art at Liberty Vintage Marketplace in Covington. Richard Reed retired from teaching in the Tipton County School System and was an artist in residence for two years at the Tipton County Museum. Rachel Suratt enjoys painting in several mediums and currently has had two exhibits at the Jimmy Naifeh Center. Patsy Turner enjoys painting in all mediums and has exhibited her artwork throughout the Memphis area.

The artwork of the Tipton Art League Plein Air Painters will be on display inside the Learning Resource Center’s Ripley Power and Light lobby at the Jimmy Naifeh Center from April 1 through June 28, 2024. The public is invited to attend the reception, where they can meet both the Plein Air Painters and the Master Gardeners. This event is free, and refreshments will be served.
